Back-to-School Screentime: EdTech, 1:1s, Testing, AI Tutors, and More!
The school year has started, and for many students, backpacks have more than just a pencil and a binder in them (if they even have those). Today, most American children are now given an internet-connected device by their school to meet the supposed needs of “21st century learning.” But is it “better for learning” to hand young children advanced technologies before they’ve even learned to write their names? Does it improve focus in the classroom to give middle schoolers access to ChatGPT, YouTube, and gaming? Have things changed so much in a short period of time that our understanding of education must also fundamentally change?
These are important questions. Unfortunately, too much educational technology too soon has not been a net positive for children, education, or learning. Already overburdened teachers are now asked to monitor student use of these devices (in addition to policing student personal devices like smartphones). With increased computer time at school, learning goes down; distraction goes up; and safety and privacy are threatened.
In this exclusive webinar with Emily Cherkin, M.Ed., aka The Screentime Consultant, attendees will hear about the current state of EdTech in American schools; learn about the risks that come with giving children access to sophisticated technology before they are developmentally ready; and build skills and confidence to ask tough and important questions.
Dubbed the “EdTech Watchdog,” Emily approaches this topic with curiosity, compassion, and courage. A former middle school English teacher and current adjunct professor at the University of Washington Evans School of Public Policy, Emily understands that children, teaching, and learning goes far beyond standardizing, quantifying, and data-fying.
Join us live on Sunday, September 7, 2025 at 5 PM PST/8 PM EST for this important webinar. Emily will be sure to leave time for Q/A.
Registration required. This webinar is free for our T.I.M.E. Collective members and $25 for non-members.
