Children need technology education in school. Students should learn about algorithms and how the internet came to be and who profits when we engage, as well as fundamental skills like typing, research, citations, and identifying mis- and dis-information.

But acquiring these skills does not start by giving a child an internet-connected device in school. We teach children about consent and safe touching without submitting them to abuse. We teach young teenagers how to drive in Driver's Ed before we put them behind the wheel. We teach students about substance use without providing them drugs and alcohol.

The same should be true for technology in education too. But that is very different from "educational technology" or "EdTech."

When it comes to student-facing products and platforms, EdTech encompasses anything from 1:1 internet-connected tablets or laptops (one device for every student), digital learning management systems (where children post homework and view grades), and online curricula.

Whether or not EdTech tools or products work to improve learning is an excellent question to ask. But that is only the first part of the conversation: it's not just about whether or not these tools are effective for learning, but whether or not they are safe and legal too.

How can schools establish what EdTech tools meet this high bar of efficacy, safety, and legality? What should parents know about advocating for tech-intentional EdTech in schools? How do we prioritize the skills children need to thrive without displacing opportunities to build them?

Join Emily Cherkin, MEd., The Screentime Consultant, and Colin Anton Samuel, Chief Technology Officer at the Brearley School for a candid conversation about what Educational Technology (or EdTech) can and should look like in schools.

This event is for parents, educators, school leaders, policymakers, technologists, and anyone concerned about or interested in talking about issues relating to EdTech. The conversation will explore ways that technology can be both dangerously problematic and critically important in education. As Emily often says, however, "EdTech is not TechEd." Understanding the difference is key towards building school communities who use technology intentionally, safely, and legally.

The first hour of the event will be a conversation between Colin and Emily. The second hour will allow time for Q and A, smaller-group discussions, and networking.
